Report: Shelbyville residents pay 21 percent less than national average in bills

A report released by doxo, an all-in-one bill pay app, reveals that the average Shelbyville resident spends $1,569 per month in bills – about 21 percent less than the national average.

By contrast, doxo lists the national average as $2,003. The data, the which doxoINSIGHTS report lists for Shelbyville as well as more than 4,000 towns and cities, breaks down bill payments into ten different categories, including utilities, auto loans, cable bills, and more.

The average resident pays between $800-900 in either mortgage or rent, around $370 for their car payment, around $230 for utilities, and nearly $400 in insurance.

More specifically, Shelbyville households pay:

$900 for their mortgage

$810 for rent

$377 for auto loans

$226 in utilities

$93 for health insurance

$236 for auto insurance

$99 for cable and internet

$77 for mobile phones

$85 for alarm and security features

and $65 for life insurance.

These bill payments make up about 34 percent of the average Shelbyville household income, according to the doxoINSIGHTS report.

The report also shows that surrounding towns pay similar amounts in their bills: Greensburg’s average is at $1,518, Franklin’s is at $1,551, Greenwood’s is at $1,758, and Greenfield is at $1,992. For this area, Greenfield residents pay the highest in bills.

“Common billers” whom Shelbyville residetns pay include Shelbyville Public Utilities, Duke Energy, American Water Company, Vectren and Advanced Disposal, according to the report.

The report lists Zionsville as paying the most in bills for the state, at $2,600; and Decatur residents pay the least, at $1,200.

The doxoINSIGHTS report also shows what time of the day Shelbyville residents pay their bills. Most residents pay their bills between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Most residents pay bills with a debit card, but some use a credit or bank card to pay.
